Description
Wow. Offered here is an extremely rare collectible item from the early days of intercollegiate football. This is an advertising item from over a century ago that appears to depict a Yale University football player in a varsity sweater with an antique style leather melon style football, with two young women on his arms. The art is similar to that of Earl Christy, though the piece is not signed or attributed. The plate is porcelain and measures about 9 inches in diameter. There are no chips although there are minor scratches and wear and tear. The rim is scalloped with gold trim. The left side features a calendar for each of the 12 months with sports motifs of baseball, shooting, fishing, football and tennis. The Year 1912 is noted, which was the year the Woodrow Wilson defeated Teddy Roosevelt and Taft for the presidency. The plate still bears an inscription that says Compliments of E.L. Nordahl Delicatessen & Grocery 2336 W. North Ave. I don't know if this was an establishment in New York City or New Haven, Connecticut as I have not been able to find any information on E.L. Norldahl. Overall, this is just a wonderful item for the early football collector or Ivy League affiicianados.
