    HISTORY/MARKS:
Pickard China has a long history dating back to 1893 when Wilder Pickard established his company in Edgerton, Wisconsin.  Towards the end of the century, he moved his business to Chicago and specialized in hand painted porcelain and art pieces.  He purchased a 2 family row house at 316 LaSalle Street in Chicago.  He listed this as his business location through 1902.  Picard gradually acquired the use of a number of nearby horse barns evolving into a fragmented studio.  He still depended on much “cottage” work.  His first real studio operated in the 1903-1905 time period in a converted carriage barn which was built shortly after the 1871 Chicago Fire, hence the name “The Carriage Barn” which employed 32 artists during this time period.  He moved to Ravenwood Studio in 1905 on the North Side of Chicago.  Anna Atkins (Pickard's sister) suggested that Tiffany's look of hammered gold might be emulated in china by the use of acid etching.  Pickard installed an acid etching room in the rear of the studio on the second floor in 1911.  Joseph Yeschek's son, Frank, was placed in charge.  Use of the solid gold maple leaf mark placed over the manufacturer's mark started in 1912 and was overstamped with a red double circle.  This changed to a black double circle in 1913.  The US Customs Service prohibited the covering of the country of manufacturing and admonished Pickard several times prompting him by 1916 to place the gold maple leaf beside the manufacturer's mark.
Pickard's son, Austin, joined the company in the late 1920’s and experimented in developing a fine china dinnerware body.  He moved the company in 1930 to Antioch, IL where it remains today where the 4th generation of family members leads Pickards.  After the Great Depression by 1933, only 7 decorating studios remained in the china decorating business in the Greater Chicago area with Pickard being the largest one.  The Pickard China mark on this piece is identified by Alan B. Reed’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Pickard China as mark #18 which was used 1938-Present.
