This curious journal is published to provide important news and pertinent advertising from Yarmouth Port, and other surrounding communities on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Of course the Editors will take the opportunity to let their thoughts be known in editorials about current topics of the day. In addition one might find notices, such as that Willie Knowles is taking violin lessons, or the Ladies' Sew Circle will be meeting at the Baptist Church. You'll also see Birth, Death, and Marriage Announcements. And just so you know what your neighbors are up to, there's news about where people have traveled, who's retiring, who's building a house, etc.
Twenty-five percent of the newspaper is simply comprised of advertising … which might be the best part … and a real history lesson. You'll see ads for Boots, Harnesses, Grain, Linens, Coal, Glass and Crockery, Stoves and Ranges, Dry Goods, and more
.
Things people used in their everyday life in 1887.
This historical local "Cape Cod Newspaper" is in fair to good, and in fragile condition. It is complete, with all pages present, but it has quite a bit of wear. A previous owner has repaired many of the small tears, and holes with archival tape, but it is still fragile. There are still several tiny tears to the edges and corners. There is also some age toning and a lot of spots of foxing /browning/soiling. The damage to the spine has been repaired. Also the newspaper seems to be faded, but one page (the ads) is still quite bright. So we're not sure how much is fading and how much is due to the original printing technique and the ink used. Considering that this newspaper is more than 130 years old, it is actually not surprising that there is some wear.
Please see all 16 photos above and below to confirm the condition of this newspaper.
A rare and fascinating "1887, Feb. 17, Cape Cod News, a Massachusetts Newspaper, Vol 1, No. 1, (Inaugural Edition.)," and a fantastic addition to any Library or Collection!!!!!
